Jennifer Queen is making her debut in the art world by repurposing statistical data about communities of African descent to create visually engaging, cooperation based, digital imagery. Queen uses interactive mapping technology, photographs and statistical data to explore themes of African spirituality, cultural commodification and beauty. An African Studies scholar by training, Queen began creating as a means of bridging the gap between the rich intellectual but often isolating tradition of academia with the highly visual, immediately effective world of art. Her forthcoming installation encourages contemplation of the relationship between normalized local economic practices in Southeast D.C. and wider national impact. Raised in Compton, California, and currently residing in Washington, DC, Queen is an artist to watch.
