Join more than 50 D.C.-area theater companies at the Kennedy Center for a series of free readings and open rehearsals of plays and musicals in development by local, regional, and national playwrights, librettists, and composers--some with scripts in hand, others almost fully staged. The roster of performances covers a range of contemporary material--from D.C. election-year topics like presidents and social unrest to Black Lives Matter and the LGBT community--as well as subjects ranging from Peter Pan and fabled historic figures to romance and relationships in the 21st century.
Enjoy beer, wine, and spirits served at a special reduced price or grab a cup of complimentary coffee (available 10 a.m.–6 p.m.) in celebration of the festival's 15th anniversary, as the Kennedy Center's Atrium and Roof Terrace transforms into a café and beer garden for the duration of the festival. Plus, don't miss dressing up for the karaoke after-party hosted by Kostume Karaoke taking place in the Atrium on Saturday beginning at 9 p.m. And on Labor Day Monday, stop by the Atrium for free hot dogs, chips, and soda beginning at 12 noon--available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
