With both Morocco and the United States approaching historical electoral crossroads this year, this conference will address the role of media in influencing society, leading and adapting to change, and shaping history. From the use of media by candidates in the U.S. Presidential election and coverage of the conventions to the reportage on Moroccan elections and use of social media during the recent coup d’état in Turkey, media is having a significant impact on people’s perceptions, their decisions, and the course of events perhaps like at no other time in history.
The conference will feature prominent members of the Moroccan, U.S., and international news media, academics, think tank experts, the business community, and others to explore the role of media in today’s dangerous and rapidly changing world, the importance of free speech and critical thinking in a democracy, and the potential political impact of Moroccan-American voices in America. Invited speakers and guests include high officials from the U.S. and Moroccan government.
The conference is a sequel to the first International Media Forum hosted by the Moroccan American Network in 2014. As part of a week of associated activities, this year’s conference will provide networking opportunities, and permit exchanges of information and best practices. The conference will also recognize excellence in media with several awards and celebrate the 5th anniversary of on-line news platform, Morocco World News, the only English language media outlet focussed on news relating to Morocco.
Panel discussions will address the changing face of media in a world of rapid technological change, the development of digital media, and the relationship of media to national security. There will be discussion of the role of media in the political processes in the U.S. and Morocco, and the impact of and influence of media on public opinion, society, and the development of democracy.
