Black Broadway on U: Echoes of an Era, DC Cultural Legacies & Innovation

  • Studio Theatre 1501 14th Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20005 United States (map)

Black Broadway on U: Echoes of an Era, DC Cultural Legacies & Innovation, an interactive Pop-up museum exhibit conveys photographs, memorabilia, video projections, an audio soundscape, typography, oral history memories and stories told through the lens and diverse voices of the black community. The exhibit captures intimate moments of joy, pride, power, resilience, achievement and struggle of early 20th century black achievers who lived along D.C.’s U Street corridor when it was known as “Black Broadway.” This multimedia activation bridges D.C.'s Black Broadway on U’s cultural legacy, rich heritage and colorful history from the past to the present through the physical and digital where art, vintage design, digital content and interactions are added to this real world environment trigged with a camera-enabled device, such as a smartphone or tablet via the Aurasma mobile app.

During this historical, virtual journey back into time, the museum’s site visitors will DISCOVER, EXPLORE, and EXPERIENCE a deeper storytelling dive and learn about Black Broadway’s change-makers from iconic entertainers to educators, to trailblazing business leaders and heroes of the civil rights movement.
