Join us on October’s First Friday for the opening receptions of solo exhibitions by Rives Wiley, Joseph Shetler and Jackie Hoysted. Wiley’s Dinner Party Download blends real, surreal, and digital to create paintings and videos where in every sense the figures are trapped in the image. While all of her work is painted by hand, the scenes are intimately informed by a digital aesthetic and often attempt to hide evidence of the painter’s touch creating a tension that strikes a chord within the viewer that persuades them to reexamine how they fit into their own realities. Shetler’s Regarding Space will feature new drawings that reflect upon his upbringing in a Mennonite family and the concept of a “simple” life free from emphasis on the endless pursuit of worldly success, popular culture, and social media; his quiet drawings serve as a rejection of the things that he believes complicate our lives and expose the complexities of the paper, graphite, and quiet forms. Hoysted’s Vote4Pope is a participatory art performance project intended to draw attention to the unequal status of women in the Catholic Church. A traveling trunk show of Papal regalia and props, the public are invited to dress up as Pope and pose in a papal like gilded throne, and pose for their portrait. Guests can meet the artists at the reception on Friday, October 7 from 6-9pm, during Dupont Circle’s First Friday Gallery Walk, sponsored by Bier Baron Tavern.
